There are many dogs in Spain owned by a variety of people. Overall the Spanish don't seem to be the most caring owners in the world. They either worship them or couldn't care less, leaving them to fend for themselves out on the streets when they go out to work. A lot of dogs are purely for working or hunting. The hunting dogs are in our opinion the most poorly treated being alone all week then at the weekend early in the morning taken out in small trailers as many as 6 or 7 just for sport. Then left again all week chained up with only bread to eat. The main breed used for hunting in this region of Spain is the Podenco. there are a great many here, but you probably won't have seen one outside of Spain.
Most Spanish live in apartments and it is very unusual to see large dogs living in apartments. Yorkshire Terriers and small Spanish type dogs are very popular, and we assume are looked after very well. Large dogs are mostly guard dogs and live outside protecting villas and large homes.
Here in Spain it's different from the U.K as you see a lot of loose dogs either abandoned or left out for the day ... also you very often see dead animals, including dogs by the roadside.
There are quite a few canine rescue centres mostly run by English and German people. A lot of dogs are taken to Germany to be re homed, but it is still a very poor situation.
However the people that show dogs in Spain are a different kettle of fish as obviously they are very enthusiastic about the quality and health of the show dogs, and are prepared to sacrifice lots of time and money in the pursuit of success.
