SALLY

Our Rescue Bitch

One day in December 2006 when we were driving down the hill from our villa we saw a car stopped at the rubbish bins and with a couple there was what we thought was a Stafford puppy. We stopped just past the car and backed up to take a closer look, but the other car was driving off and the puppy that we thought was with them was still there. We called to it and she came running towards us, but stopped a couple of feet away and flattened herself to the ground. It was only then that we saw she was not a puppy, but a very small tiger brindle bitch ... and quite an old one at that. She wasn't wearing a collar but we thought that she must live in one of the villas round here and possibly had got out. We took her home and the next day took her to the vet to check if she had a chip which would enable us to re-unite her with her owner ... but no chip (it is a legal requirement to have a chip here in Spain) Our vet reckoned that she was about 8 yrs old or so and was typical of a Spanish Staffordshire Bull Terrier in being so small. We all thought that she had been badly treated as she would cower and flatten herself on the floor when approached. We decided to hang onto her for a few days and see if any Lost Dog notices went up anywhere round the town ... none did. We took her back to the vet to give her a blood test to make sure she was OK so then we could have her chipped and adopt her.

Here in Spain if you find a loose dog that isn't chipped, you can get the dog chipped and then it is legally yours ... no matter what any previous owner may say.

She was very thin when we first found her, but has now put on a bit of weight and eats whatever you give her ... I don't think that she has ever eaten such good food before. A lot of the Spanish just give their dogs loaves of stale bread ... not a very balanced diet !!

Sally has been with us for almost 3 years now and she is truly one of the family. she has gained weight and will eat anything that you give her. She is now a happy little dog and so good and affectionate ... super obedient (as long as you give all the commands in Spanish) ... she likes nothing better than running round the garden with Jerry Lee and Sophie, playing with her bones which she takes from the others then puts them in her special place behind a big palm tree ... as we call it ... Sally's Boneyard !!
